Supposedly, the luckiest place to win the lottery in the UK is Birmingham, West Midlands. The National Lottery launched in 1994 and since then has created 168 millionaires from the Birmingham area.

Birmingham, West Midlands (UK) is officially the luckiest place to win a prize over £1,000,000 on the National Lottery.

Birmingham grabbed top spot, with 168 millionaires, while Belfast came second, with 133, and Glasgow came third, with 125.

Additionally, the National Lottery looked at where players are most likely to win a prize of more than £50,000. The winner was Galashiels, a town in the Scottish borders. Galashiels has seen the most big winners by local population – on average, one in every 894 players from the town grabbed a big prize.

Romford in Essex came second and Cleveland in the north-east of England came third – one in 922 and one in 952 respectively winning sums over £50,000.

Birmingham also topped a list of millionaires being made in the last three years (37). Belfast came second again, with 34, while Leicester came third, with 30.

Andy Carter, from Camelot, said they go to “every corner of the country” to pay out big prizes.

“With on average seven new millionaires made every week, you can be sure we’ll be visiting somewhere close to you very soon.

“Over the last 25 years, the National Lottery has been making amazing things happen: 565,000 Good Cause grants have been given out to projects big and small, that’s the equivalent of 200 life-changing projects in every UK postcode district making a huge impact on communities all over the country.”
